Abstract Surgery to implant a total hip replacement (THR) is very successful in reducing pain and restoring function. This procedure has become more prevalent, projections estimate further increases demand. However, complications can arise, current diagnostic techniques often fail expose underlying issues before they result catastrophic failure that requires revision surgery. An instrumented implant, with embedded sensors capable of real time condition monitoring, would be an attractive proposition incorporate within THR. Continued advances the performance miniaturisation electronic components, systems, sensing wireless communications have given tools resources medical device manufacturers need innovate field implantable devices. Smart implants are already being widely used healthcare including pacemakers, cochlear implants, glucose monitors insulin pumps however, smart THR not yet been realised. Since implantation first 1960s there several vitro studies monitoring levels loosening. Additionally, significant research conducted using THRs perform vivo measurement biomechanical metrics, force moments. To date less than 100 patients successfully received implant.
